This is a non-profit site founded by Jasmine Yap, who has always dreamed of helping the world in any way possible. Her aspiration and burning passion to give has sparked an idea to act as a charity catalyst – connecting donors to their preferred charity organisations and projects.
With more resources gathered, many charity organizations will be able to fulfill more missions and create greater impact to their beneficiaries.
In order to understand more about the objectives and missions of DonateAction as well as what DonateAction is all about, below is an abstract of our interview with Charity House in March 2015.
Why did we decide to start Donate Action?
It all started out with volunteering at various charity bodies. The more we got in touch with these organisations, the more we understand the struggles and problems of running a charity organisation, of being a victim of natural disaster, of having to see animals be put to sleep.Problems with charity efforts now are mainly: inefficient distribution of goods, unawareness of charity bodies available and lack of resources. We believe that donation is Love in Action. We hope that this website can serve as a platform to gather and connect all charity bodies’ needs with the public. With the help of each and every one of you, we hope we can help better in efficiently solving these problems facing by these people, animal and environment
The Case of Non-profit Children Protection Home
The lady we met at the Children Protective Home was a kind and warm caregiver – with a genuine heart for the kids. In life, we are all connected as one. Each and every boy and girl at the child protection home are our sons and daughters who deserves our kindness, attention and love.
The Case of Stray Dogs
The case of stray dogs is one that is close and dear to many animal lover’s heart. Last year in August, I had the opportunity to meet the founder of Save Our Strays (SOS) who then shared about his/her society when I was running my cafe & lodge business. A few weeks later, we had the honour of providing SOS with the venue to hold a press conference at our café. That press conference alone had created an awareness to many people about SOS’ mission to save strays from being removed from residential areas.Often when SOS rescue strays dogs, they do not have adequate shelter for them. There was once a virus outbreak at their care clinic and they needed to temporary re-home the dogs. So we offered 12 female dogs to stay at the vacant land next to our lodge and arranged for them to be neutered. The concept is to neuter and let the feeder sustain the strays in the community so that the dogs need not be put to sleep by the councils. But to a certain extend, neutering is still not the best solution. Ideally all animals should be given a chance to live freely in nature, free from harm and dangers. Therefore if any of you have vacant land, you may consider to use it for something like an animal protection farm. This year itself, SOS informed us that they had rescued 25 dogs from being put down/killed by the city councils, and that they were desperately looking for adopters to take them. The story ends with a happy ending but a heart-breaking twist. Thankfully, a good friend of mine who is a factory owner was happy to adopt 2 of dogs. However, the rest were unfortunately put to sleep. This was the moment that we felt so helpless for not being able to do more for the dogs at that point of time. If more people can be connected through the right channels, more lives can definitely be saved.
The Case of The Flood
As Malaysians, I am sure none of us can forget the terrible flood disaster that happened to our east coast counterparts in November 2014. After calling out for fund raising, the public was very responsive! We managed to send 2 lorries filled with relief items to Kelantan! Due to the lack of man-power, we collaborated with the Bomba Relief Team. This is when we realized what publicity can do for disaster victims. Together with a wonderful team of volunteers, we provided and set up a collection center opposite Queensbay Mall. Together, we packed, organized the relief items before loading to the transport. We completed it in 2 sessions: first delivery batch departed on 28 Dec 2014 and the second on 1 Jan 2015, all in which finally managed to reach the disaster area after 14 hours of drive.
However, there was the problem of uneven distribution. The local people were not well-equipped to control the distribution. Hence, a lot of victims were unable to get the emergency relief items like water and food. We heard that they were boiling rain water to drink for the first five days despite having the relief items sent there already. Worse still, about 1 week later, the relief items were too much, that the team told me the centre in Kelantan can open a TESCO already.
But this is just the emergency rescue efforts, as they need more fundraising for re-home and rebuilding of the shelter which only little efforts had been made for. Perhaps it was due to the lack of media reporting in creating awareness of what the organization was doing, or it could be because of insufficient donation or volunteering channels.
What do We do?
We are constantly looking out for charity bodies to be part of our donation drives, but we want to know who need more help. Which one is more urgent? What does the charity body do? We prefer to have a deeper understanding about their contribution to the society, in hopes that this website can also act as an introduction of charity bodies to the public about their work.Basically for now, we will start with contacting the local charities to understand their background and current needs which will then be voiced out through this website so that the public are aware of how and what they can do to help these organisations. It will take time to get them listed; but soon this website will serve as a charity directory as well. There is also an event section in this website which shows upcoming charity events, another way for DonateAction to help publicize and create public awareness.
How does Donate Action work?
If you wish to donate, you can list the goods that you would like to donate at the website. Charity bodies or individuals will be able to view and contact the donors directly. We will not be collecting the donations. Donate Action serves as a platform to help donors find their desired charity and to help charities reach out for help. However, we understand many of our donors may not have the time to purchase donation goods. In circumstances where consumable goods are needed, donors can opt to donate money and we will arrange to purchase the items for the charity body. As such, a local business registry will be created, in which 100% of the funds will be delivered from the stores to the affected neighbourhood.
Who are we representing?
We think that charity or donation is nothing to do with religion, race or target. It is done for a good cause.
We are representing the public. We act as a voice for each and every one of you who has a heart for people in need, for the animals and for the environment.
